Sustainable Events

1. Decorations

When considering sustainable decoration, it must adhere to these three premises: that it comes from nature in a respectful manner, that it is healthy for people, and that it is long-lasting.

For any event striving to be sustainable, the three “Rs” rule should be applied (reduce, reuse, recycle), although reducing the quantity of decorative elements may not be an option if a complete and visually aesthetic stand is desired.

1.1 Decoration pieces

To begin with, it is advisable, if sustainability is the goal, to rent the majority of furniture or decorative pieces instead of purchasing them, unless you plan to repurpose them after the event.

To begin with, it is advisable, if sustainability is the goal, to rent the majority of furniture or decorative pieces instead of purchasing them, unless you plan to repurpose them after the event. In terms of decoration, we can easily compensate for not reducing by reusing. Consider purchasing second-hand items or recyclable materials that could be given a second life, for example, by reusing them in future events.

In addition to ecology, economic sustainability is one of the most important aspects for the well-being of society. Therefore, it is crucial to give more visibility to local commerce—especially those focused on sustainability and ecology—instead of investing in companies that do not share the ecological values we seek.

Furthermore, whenever possible, incorporate natural plants into the space decoration. There are countless varieties to choose from that best suit the type of company the stand represents. Consider their care requirements and aesthetics. Not only do plants decorate and provide a fresh and pleasant atmosphere, but they also purify the air. Dry plants can also be used if you want to save on maintenance costs.

1.2 Lighting

Lighting is not left behind in this sustainable trend. The keys to sustainable decoration for space lighting are LEDs. LED technology is a sustainable alternative that allows for electricity consumption savings; its flexible composition enables it to be fully adaptable to different designs and furniture without limiting any space.

To achieve a comfortable and warm atmosphere, the general rule recommends five different lighting points. To ensure functionality, also consider a reliable supplier and quality bulbs.

1.3 Furniture and Materials

The first thing we should know is that furniture is considered sustainable or ecological when it is “manufactured with natural materials and without chemical treatments, making it a product that does not harm the environment, the health of the buyer, or the health of those who manufacture it.” When we talk about sustainable materials, we mean those that do not contain toxic elements, are environmentally friendly, locally sourced, and whose manufacturing process leads to a reduction in the use of natural resources.

One of the most commonly used materials is wood. If it comes from responsibly managed forests, it ensures better preservation of the environment. Additionally, natural materials are always much more durable, and if you need to dispose of them, you can give them a new life.

Furthermore, there are other sustainable materials, such as aluminum, which has characteristics that make it an environmentally friendly metal: abundant, indefinitely recyclable, and therefore durable. Its quality and material properties are never lost.

We also encounter sustainable fabrics, such as Bamboo, Linen, Hemp Fabrics, Organic Cotton, among others. Similarly, we could include Cork, which is a lightweight, waterproof, breathable, and, of course, eco-friendly material.

By using these types of materials, we can reduce water consumption, raw material usage, energy consumption, and thus prevent waste generation, among many other things. Using these materials, we can make significant changes for the environment, yielding positive results.

2. Stands for Trade Shows and Conventions

A sustainable stand, also known as a green stand, ephemeral eco-architecture, or environmentally conscious ephemeral architecture, is a way of conceiving the design of stands in a sustainable manner, aiming to optimize natural resources and manufacturing and assembly systems to minimize the environmental impact of stands on the environment and exhibitors.

Sustainable stands are not entirely new in the stand sector, but it is true that they were not given as much importance before. Currently, many companies in this type of service have joined this trend. There is a greater awareness of how to generate business and try to understand how to produce in a more sustainable way.

Increasingly, there is a growing awareness of the urgent need to address the significant pollution problem of the last century. Consequently, some fair and event organizers have begun incorporating awards for the most sustainable stands at their events.

One of the fairs that grants such an award is Fitur. In its 2020 edition, it marked the inaugural occasion for this recognition. This accolade, known as the “Sustainable Stand” award, was bestowed upon the Andalusian pavilion and the Paradores stand.

It’s evident that there is a growing trend towards designing and assembling sustainable stands for fairs and conferences. Among the more recent winners is Paradores, whose stand was constructed using FSC-certified wood. All screens and lighting elements are 100% energy-efficient, graphics are printed on FSC-certified cardboard or fabric on frames, utilizing water-based paints. Packaging usage has been minimized, along with a reduction in the distribution of promotional materials. All distributed items are produced using eco-friendly materials, and the avoidance of brochures is notable; instead, attendees can directly download information onto their mobile devices and other gadgets.

Using sustainable stands can have many benefits, here are some:

Mounting system features a patented aluminum frame, additionally constructed with HPL and laminated walls.

Options utilizing PVC panels, Alucobond, and fire-resistant white or printed textiles

There is a wide variety of finishes and models available for sustainable stands

Designs featuring straight and curved forms, hanging elements, illuminated drawers, and numerous reusable decorative elements.

Actions you can take to make stands sustainable include:

Enhancing biodiversity on the premises.

Implementing specific measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Offsetting the carbon footprint in manufacturing, assembly, and operations

Collaborating with various schools and workshops that provide surplus materials for recycling.

Utilizing wood from sustainable forests to create an environmentally friendly or modular stand.
